Law Number 27 year 2007 on Disaster Management
At last , the long awaited law that will give a comprehensive legal foundation for disaster management is fullfiled. The Disaster Management Bill was drafted and endorse by MPBI, UNDP and the civil society since February 2005 has been passed in the general assembly of the Parliament in March 29, 2007 as Law number 24 year 2007. The next step is to draft 6 Government Decrees and 2 Presidential Decrees.
National Action Plan for Disaster Risk Reduction
The National Action Plan for Disaster Risk Reduction has been launched by the National Planning and Development Agency (Bappenas) and the National Coordination Body for Disaster Management (Bakornas PB) supported by UNDP as the Indonesian Government commitment to ratify UN resolution number 63/1999 formulated as the Hyogo Framework for Action and Beijing Action Plan. The goal of the document is to shift disaster management from response to the whole process of disaster management that is able to prevent or mitigate the effect of disaster and reduce or eradicate the risk of disaster.
Outreack of Disaster Management Law and National Action Plan
MPBI together with Care International, GTZ Good Local Government, USAID Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning System, OXFAM Hongkong, Oxfam GB, etc. has implemented outreach activities in the local level on Disaster Management Law and National Action Plan with the hope that the local governance will develop local regulation and local action plans on disaser risk reduction.
National Symposium on CBDRM (Community Based Disaster Risk Management) Community Based Disaster Risk Management (CBDRM) approaches has been used as a tool for disaster risk reduction by enhancing the capacity of the community in order for them to empower themselves in mitigating from disaster risks and manage the threat and effect of a disaster. The end goal is how those communities can participate in decission making of matters of their interest. Since 2004, MPBI has organized National Symposiums on CBDRM as an avenue to exchange experiences between the academics and practitioners of CBDRM.
Strengthening Network for Disaster Risk Reduction MPBI realize that disaster risk reduction cannot be done alone and will be more effective if it is executed together with other organisations to fulfill the Rights of the people to be safe and protected from disaster.
MPBI Publication on Disaster Risk Reduction MPBI has several publications on disaster risk reduction with topics variation on basic information on disaster, international treaties, policies etc. The publications are available at MPBI Secretariat and can be reprinted upon request.
MPBI Trainings MPBI has organized trainings on materials related to disaster management. The training materials are disaster management, Sphere Humanitarian Standards, CBDRM, etc.
